Lucifer means shining one or light bearer, more commonly referred to and known as Satan or the devil. He was created, along with all of the other angelic host, and was there when God created the Earth (Job 38:7). In Ezekiel we are given a description of this being. (Ezek. 28:11-19). A created cherub that covers (protects). It was Lucifer's position to overshadow the earth, protect and rule it. It was initially given to him for dominion. (see also Isaiah 14:12-17). Satan is called the god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4); prince of the powers of the air (Eph. 2:2); the tempter (Matt. 4:3); the wicked one (Matt. 13:19); Beelzebub (Matt. 10:25). He is compared to a roaring lion in 1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant (cautious, alert, watchful), because your adversary, the devil, like a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour." Concerning Satan (Lucifer) Jesus stated "the thief comes not but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…" (Jn. 10:10) and that he is a murderer and liar "He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; for he is a liar and the father of it." (John 8:44)
We see a pattern throughout Scripture as to what Satan attempts to do. He tempts men; provokes people to sin; causes offense; transforms himself into an angel of light; resists others; enters into union with others against God; sends messengers to defeat those that believe in Christ; hinders the gospel message; steals the Word of God from people lest they should believe it; works miracles; contends with messengers of God; hinders answers to prayer; sets snares for men to fall into sin; makes war on believers; causes diversions and blinds men to the gospel; causes double mindedness; doubt and unbelief; deadness and weakness; delay and compromise and causes divisions and strife. One of his greatest weapons is being able to openly and feely cause, provoke and do evil among those that deny he exists and therefore not willing to recognize personal attacks against them. Nor are they able to resist and fight against spiritual influences since this disbelief automatically rejects the notion, leaving an individual defenseless. One of the most significant things about what Jesus accomplished on the cross was not only in overcoming death and the grave, thereby making it possible for us to as well, but in defeating Satan and stripping him of any authority.
"He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." (1 Jn. 3:8)
"…having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it." (Col 2:15)
"I am he that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen, and have the keys of hell and of death." (Rev. 1:18)
"O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law, but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Cor. 15:55
